The Still Photography Series™ created by Catherine F. Powers embodies a single frame of film exposed to light only once. These images may push the range of blacks, whites, and grays with contrast, or intentionally capture narrow mid-tones of hues. The overall compositions may be balanced and symmetrical, or quirky and askew. This series has been created using both fresh and expired film for different visual outcomes.
The Still Photography Series™ created by Catherine F. Powers uses 35mm film with a completely manual Nikon camera without any cropping or zooming in the lens.
This creative process requires each layer to be perfectly framed while also planning out how information will translate with the crisp blacks and whites with softer shades of gray. This photography series is designed to provoke imagination, wonder and curiosity.
This archival prints are created on silver gelatin using traditional darkroom printing techniques.
Sizes: Variable upon request with custom printing and customization
Our film negatives are scanned at 600dpi ultra-high resolution and can be printed into very large-scale photographic prints, artworks, photograph prints, or custom murals upon request. Specialty printing options can be created on metal, plexiglass, fabric, or other innovative substrates.

Q: Why shoot 35mm black and white film in a world where digital ease abounds?
Catherine explains the inception of her photographic work, “In today’s world of technology and ease shooting with traditional film offers a different creative discipline. Imagine quickly shooting twenty photos on your phone and easily deleting, cropping, and filtering images for instant rewards. Now imagine using a completely manual camera where you need to adjust the light meter, focus your subject fields, frame a composition without using a zoom lens or cropping. Further imagine each image you create will cost both money as well as an uncertain result until development. Next imagine translating your visual field into shades of gray before capturing the image, do you desire high contrasts of black and whites in the image, or possibly a narrow bandwidth of mid-tone grays, how will what you see translate onto film? There are so many different layers of design, deliberation, commitment, and care coming together into each frame of film being used. Nothing is quick, easy, or certain. Additionally, this collection avoids all filters or editing in post-production programs so each work is fully created within the camera. Every photograph is raw and real, perfectly imperfect, or possibly exquisitely magical. To embrace this process of creating is being open to more failure as well as uniquely cultivated successes.”
